Sammy Sosa is a true American success story -- born in the Dominican Republic, Sosa grew up poor in a single parent household (his father died when he was young), but he possessed a great passion and talent for baseball, and in 1989, a major league baseball team from the United States, the Texas Rangers, signed him to a contract to play ball .
