"Whole Lotta Red" is the second studio album by American rapper Playboi Carti, released on December 25, 2020, through AWGE and Interscope Records. The album was primarily produced by F1lthy and Art Dealer, with additional production from Pi'erre Bourne, Maaly Raw, Lil 88, Jasper Harris, Ojivolta, and Wheezy. Kanye West and Matthew Williams served as executive producers. The album marked a stylistic departure from the melodic trap sound of "Playboi Carti" (2017) and "Die Lit", incorporating elements of experimental hip hop, trap, and rage music, alongside influences from punk and electronic genres. Lyrical themes focus on topics such as wealth, violence, and hedonism. Critics noted the album’s loose structure and high-energy pacing, with several tracks favoring chants, ad-libs, or fragmented delivery over conventional verse-chorus songwriting. The project features a dark, vampire-inspired aesthetic, with Playboi Carti adopting a stylized rock star persona. Its abrasive production and minimalistic approach drew comparisons to Kanye West’s "Yeezus" (2013). Guest appearances on the album include Kanye West, Kid Cudi, and Future. Upon release, "Whole Lotta Red" received generally positive reviews, with praise directed toward its production style and vocal experimentation, while some criticism focused on its guest features and perceived lack of lyrical depth. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 100,000 album-equivalent units, becoming Playboi Carti’s first chart-topping album in the United States. In January 2022, it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Although released in late 2020, the album appeared on multiple publications’ lists of the best albums of 2021, and in 2022 it was ranked number 129 on Rolling Stone’s list of the "200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time". While its initial reception was polarized, the album has since been cited as influential in the development of the rage subgenre within trap music and has been associated with the emergence of artists such as Yeat, Ken Carson, and Che. A supporting tour for the album began in October 2021.
