Dylan Derringer (Wendell Pierce) is a lonely Florida dentist whose days are filled with his dental practice and his solo daily golf game. His life is boring and average until, encouraged by his dental assistant and friend Jaime (Joanne Froggatt), he confronts his past learning that he has an adult daughter (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) living in Brooklyn. He begins an inspirational and eventful journey outside of his comfort zone all while learning about someone he has never known for 25 years.
